The worksheets follow skills that appear in most English language arts standards for these grades, such as identifying parts of speech, using end punctuation, determining word meanings with affixes and answering questions about key details in a text.

A look at the reading passages

Each passage is an original short text of about 150–220 words written for the pack — a non-fiction piece about how honeybees communicate, a short story about a lost library book, and a how-to text about planting a bean seed. Questions move from finding information in the text (“What do bees do when they find flowers?”) to inference (“Why do you think Sam checked the library again?”) and vocabulary in context. Answer keys include sample answers for open questions.

How to use the worksheets

Who it is for

Classroom teachers, homeschooling parents, tutors and English language learners who need clear, uncluttered practice pages. The simple layout and large writing spaces suit younger students, and the Word versions let you adjust vocabulary or add your own sentences for differentiation.

Formats

Every worksheet and answer key is a print-ready PDF (US Letter, also printable on A4) and an editable DOCX. Pages are black-and-white friendly.

A sample weekly plan

Monday: parts of speech sort and a quick game of noun–verb–adjective charades. Tuesday: punctuation fix-up, reading sentences aloud to hear where they end. Wednesday: the reading passage and questions, discussing answers with a partner. Thursday: synonyms and antonyms, then rewriting a short paragraph with more precise words. Friday: sentence combining, followed by a short piece of free writing where students try to use at least three joining words. Keep each session to about fifteen minutes and review the answer keys together so mistakes become teaching moments.

Differentiation ideas

For students who need more support, complete the first two items together and provide a word bank on the board; for students ready for more, ask them to write three new examples of their own for each skill — three questions, three exclamations, three words with the prefix un-. English language learners benefit from reading passages aloud with a partner before answering questions, and from picture support for vocabulary. Because the Word versions are editable, you can swap in words from your current class topic so grammar practice and content learning reinforce each other.
